The Sunnysiders first met while they were all members of The Spike Jones Orchestra. Freddy Morgan played banjo and wrote special material. Margie Rayburn was a singer with the group, and Jad Paul played banjo, guitar and sang. Their first hit record, "Hey Mr. Banjo," was written by Freddy, who in collaboration with Jad Paul and writer-manager Norman Malkin, who wrote many of their songs.
The group had only two banjos and three voices. Through the use of "over-dubbing" their instruments and voices, they were able to produce a sound that was similar to a large ensemble.
